The BBC has announced that it will share video content with news sites with over 1 million uniques per month (it will be available to everyone in mid-August.)
The Daily Telegraph, Guardian, Independent and Daily Mail are the first on board, with video news content covering UK politics, science, business and health.
The content will be geoblocked, and will appear in “a BBC branded player with clear on-screen branding, plus link-backs to BBC Online”. There will be no white label option.
The player will be available to all site owners from “mid-August 2009”. Interested parties should apply to use the service at the BBC video player website.
Great news for everyone apart from, I guess, other third party video suppliers, like ITN and Brightcove.
It’ll also be interesting to see how this plays out, particularly with papers like the Daily Mail which for commercial reasons have been consistently hostile towards the BBC.
